Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this an insurance policy or a savings scheme?

Neither. The association is anchored on the Zimbabwean tradition of mobilising as a community to collect Chema. There is no pooled fund and no maturity date. Members simply contribute a stated amount each time a death is announced, for as long as they remain members.

How much do I pay?

A one-off joining fee (£50 during the first 3 months, £100 thereafter), a £20 annual membership fee, and a minimum of £50 per funeral within 72 hours of each death notice. You may give more if you can.

Who is covered by my membership?

You and your nominees: your spouse and your children (biological, adoptive, or children of a blended family where you can show residence or relationship). There is no limit on the number of children. Adult children are encouraged to join as members in their own right.

When does cover start?

Membership begins when your form is received and fees are paid. For the first 3 months you contribute but receive no benefit; from 3 to 6 months a sliding-scale benefit of at least £25 per member applies; after 6 months you receive the full benefit.

Can I change my nominees?

Yes, by email during the amendment window of 1 to 31 January each year. Changes carry a 6-month waiting period from 1 January. Address and contact details can be changed at any time.

What happens if I don't pay within 72 hours?

Tell the Secretary. A grace period of up to 14 days is allowed for personal challenges, and the Board will assess genuine cases. Members who fail to meet their financial obligations may have their membership withdrawn.

I live between Zimbabwe and Ireland. Am I still covered?

Yes, provided you keep paying your contributions and your annual membership fee.

What proof is needed before a payment is made?

A death certificate, proof of identity, and proof that the deceased was ordinarily resident in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland.

Is the association registered?

It is a voluntary, unincorporated association of members bound by an agreed constitution. It is not for profit. It is run by volunteers from their own homes, with a community bank account whose details are provided on registration.
